Responsibilities, routines and other people’s expectations can keep a life running long after your priorities have changed. Feeling Disconnected From Life? 7 Ways to Reconnect With What Matters

Feeling disconnected from life is more common than most people admit, especially when the life you built looks successful from the outside. This guide, inspired by Daniel Kobryner’s conversation with Elizabeth Carrio, offers seven reflective steps to help you work out what still belongs in your life and what you are continuing mainly because it is familiar.

The short answer: if you’re feeling disconnected from life despite doing everything “right”, don’t rush to a new purpose. First separate what you do well from what matters to you now, find the thread running through your life, and take small steps that give you real information.

Feeling Disconnected From Life: When a Good Life Stops Feeling Like Yours

You can be good at the life you have built and still feel increasingly disconnected from it.

You meet your responsibilities. People rely on you. From the outside, there may be no obvious reason to change anything. Yet a question keeps returning: Do I want to keep living this way?

It can be an uncomfortable question, especially when you have invested years in becoming the person everyone recognises.

A career, a relationship, a move to another country or a change in family responsibilities can bring that question into focus. Sometimes the change happens outside you. Sometimes your circumstances remain familiar while your relationship with them changes.

The temptation is to demand an immediate answer: a new purpose, a new plan, a new version of yourself.

But before deciding what comes next, there is something worth understanding: what still belongs in your life and what you are continuing mainly because it is familiar.

In her conversation with Daniel Kobryner, Elizabeth Carrio offers a thoughtful starting point. Her journey from finance and international advisory work into psychology, creativity and the search for meaning centres on a question many people postpone: Who am I beyond the roles I have learned to perform?

Feeling disconnected from life: diagram of what you do well, what matters to you now and what still belongs in your life
When you’re feeling disconnected from life, the goal is to find the overlap between what you do well and what matters now.

Common signs of feeling disconnected from life

Feeling disconnected from life rarely announces itself dramatically. It tends to show up quietly, in patterns like these:

  • Going through the motionsYou do what’s expected, efficiently, without much interest.
  • Success that feels flatAchievements arrive, but the satisfaction fades fast.
  • A question that keeps returning“Do I want to keep living this way?” appears at odd moments.
  • Being the reliable oneEveryone depends on you, and you rarely ask what you need.
  • Familiar but not chosenYour routines continue mainly because they’re familiar.
  • A sense of grief or restlessnessSomething has changed, but you can’t yet name it.

If these sound familiar, you’re not alone, and you’re not broken. You may be at the start of a life transition. For related reading, see living on autopilot and why achievement doesn’t bring happiness.

7 Ways to Reconnect When You’re Feeling Disconnected From Life

The seven steps below follow Elizabeth Carrio’s suggestions. Each one includes a short exercise you can try right here on the page. Treat them as experiments, not a test you can fail.

Seven steps to reconnect when feeling disconnected from life, from separating skills from meaning to taking a small step
Seven steps for feeling disconnected from life: from separating skills from meaning to taking one small step.

1. Separate what you do well from what matters to you now

Being capable of doing something does not automatically mean you want to keep building your life around it.

Perhaps you became the dependable person who always takes charge. Perhaps achievement brought recognition so you learned to keep achieving. Perhaps being needed became such a familiar role that you rarely asked what you needed yourself.

Those abilities may still be valuable. The question is whether you are choosing how to use them.

Try completing these three sentences:

  • People usually rely on me to…
  • I feel most interested and engaged when…
  • If I did not have to impress anyone, I would make more room for…

Look for the differences between your answers. They may reveal a neglected interest, a responsibility that needs renegotiating or a way to use an existing strength more meaningfully.

You do not have to reject everything you have built to admit that your priorities are changing.

Try it: complete the three sentences

Type your answers. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

Fill in at least two sentences to compare them.

2. Find the thread running through your life

Elizabeth’s first suggestion for navigating a transition is to look for the “red thread”: the recurring interests, concerns and experiences that connect different chapters of your life.

In the interview, she reflects on growing up in a country at war and later choosing international work connected with peace. She came to see a possible relationship between those experiences. It was a personal interpretation that helped her understand her choices.

Your own thread may be quieter. Perhaps you have always helped people make sense of difficult situations. Perhaps you loved creating things long before creativity became something you had to justify. Perhaps fairness, independence or bringing people together has repeatedly shaped your decisions.

Draw a simple timeline with five meaningful moments. Include something you loved as a child, a difficult turning point, an achievement and a time you felt particularly alive.

For each moment, ask:

  • What mattered to me here?
  • What was I trying to create, protect or change?
  • Was I moving towards something I valued or mainly away from something I feared?

Treat your answers as possibilities to explore. You do not need to force your whole life into one explanation.

The purpose is to recognise what deserves your attention now.

Feeling disconnected from life? A red thread connecting five meaningful moments helps reveal what matters to you now
A red thread through five moments: a simple way to see what matters when you’re feeling disconnected from life.

Try it: draw your five-moment timeline

Add a few words for each moment and watch your thread appear.

12345 Loved as a childTurning pointAchievementFelt aliveAnother moment

Now ask of each moment: what mattered, what was I trying to create, protect or change, and was I moving towards something I valued or away from something I feared?

3. Give yourself time to understand what you already know

When you feel uncertain, gathering more information can feel productive. Another book. Another course. Another opinion about what your life should become.

Yet there comes a point when you need space to consider what all that information means for you.

Elizabeth describes the importance of withdrawing from the noise long enough to integrate your experience. This can be as simple as a short walk without headphones or ten quiet minutes with a notebook.

Choose one question:

What am I ready to acknowledge that I keep explaining away?

Perhaps you miss learning. Perhaps you want support. Perhaps you are grieving a chapter that has ended. Perhaps your next decision needs to be about rest before it becomes about ambition.

Write what comes without requiring yourself to solve it immediately.

Reflection becomes useful when it helps you name something clearly enough to respond to it.

If your mind keeps looping on the answer, our guide on how to stop overthinking can help.

Try it: ten quiet minutes

10:00

Your question: What am I ready to acknowledge that I keep explaining away?

4. Let curiosity loosen the need for certainty

Elizabeth describes herself as a researcher: someone who keeps asking questions about people, cultures and her own experience.

That attitude offers a useful alternative to the pressure of finding one perfect answer.

Instead of asking, What should I do with the rest of my life? try asking, What would I like to understand better this month?

Instead of asking, Is this definitely my purpose? ask, What can I learn by trying it?

Curiosity also matters in relationships. Elizabeth’s work in finance led her to recognise that explaining the facts was not always enough. She needed to understand how other people saw the situation.

The next time someone reacts differently from you, pause before deciding what their response means. Ask: What matters most to you about this?

Their answer may reveal something you could not see from your own position.

5. Make room for expression without demanding a result

Painting, music, writing and time in nature are important parts of Elizabeth’s life. They offer ways to explore experience beyond analysis.

You can bring that spirit into an ordinary day. Write a page that nobody will read. Take photographs of things that catch your attention. Draw without trying to be good at it.

The value is in noticing what interests you when there is no performance to deliver.

Afterwards, ask: What did I enjoy? What surprised me? What would I like to return to?

An interest does not need to become a business or a talent you prove. Some things deserve a place in your life because they make the experience of living richer.

6. Turn meaning into an ordinary decision

Elizabeth describes spiritual intelligence in terms of asking why: why we are here, what our experiences mean and what we are called to contribute.

You do not need a particular spiritual belief to explore those questions.

Begin with something concrete: What do I want my choices to stand for this week?

If your answer is connection, make time for a conversation you have been postponing. If it is creativity, protect an hour to create. If it is honesty, acknowledge a commitment you can no longer sustain.

Meaning becomes easier to recognise when it has a place in your calendar and an expression in your behaviour.

Try it: what should your choices stand for this week?

Pick one. You’ll get an action for your calendar.

MondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFridaySaturdaySunday

Choose a word above.

7. Take a small step that gives you new information

Elizabeth’s final suggestion is deliberately modest: do something you are not used to doing and observe what happens.

You do not need to overturn your life to explore a new direction. Speak to someone whose work interests you. Attend one class. Revisit an old interest. Ask for help with a responsibility you have carried alone.

Choose an action small enough to take this week. Then ask:

  • What did I discover through doing this?
  • What felt meaningful or interesting?
  • What would I adjust before trying again?

An experiment can be useful even when you decide not to continue. You have learned something that thinking alone could not tell you.

You are allowed to build your next direction through a series of considered choices.

Try it: plan your small experiment

Feeling Disconnected From Life: Your Questions Answered

Why am I feeling disconnected from life when everything looks fine?

You can be good at the life you have built and still feel disconnected from it. Responsibilities, routines and other people’s expectations can keep a life running long after your priorities have changed. The question “Do I want to keep living this way?” is often an invitation to look at what still belongs, not a sign that something is wrong with you.

Is feeling disconnected from life normal during a life transition?

Yes. A career change, a relationship, a move to another country or a change in family responsibilities can bring the question into focus. Sometimes the change happens outside you, and sometimes your circumstances stay familiar while your relationship with them changes.

How do I find out what still belongs in my life?

Start by separating what you do well from what matters to you now. Then look for the recurring thread across your life, give yourself quiet time to reflect, and test small experiments. The seven steps in this guide walk you through each one.

What is the “red thread” in a life transition?

The red thread is the set of recurring interests, concerns and experiences that connect different chapters of your life. Elizabeth Carrio suggests looking for it when you’re navigating a transition. It is a personal interpretation to explore, not a single fixed explanation.

How long does it take to stop feeling disconnected?

There is no fixed timeline. Reconnecting usually happens through a series of small, considered choices rather than one dramatic change. Taking one small action each week gives you real information about what feels meaningful.

When should I seek professional support?

If feeling disconnected comes with persistent low mood, anxiety or changes in sleep and appetite that last for weeks, speak to your GP or a qualified therapist. Coaching can support reflection and direction, but it is not a substitute for clinical care.
